چکیده

This paper presents a new framework for modeling light interception by isolated trees which makes it possible to analyze the in uence of structural tree organization on light capture. The framework is based on a multiscale representation of the plant organization. Tree architecture is decomposed into a collection of components representing clusters of leaves at di erent scales in the tree crown. The components are represented by porous envelopes automatically generated as convex hulls containing components at a ner scale. The component opacity is de ned as the interception probability of a light beam going through its envelope. The role of tree organization on light capture was assessed by running di erent scenarii where the components at any scale were either randomly distributed or localized to their actual 3D position. The modeling framework was used with threedimensional digitized fruit trees, namely peach and mango trees. A sensitivity analysis was carried out to assess the e ect of the spatial organization in each scale on light interception. This modeling framework makes it possible to identify a level of tree description that achieves a good compromise between the amount of measurement required to describe the tree architecture and the quality of the resulting light interception model.

Foliage randomness and light interception in 3-D digitized trees: an analysis from multiscale discretization of the canopy

Light models for vegetation canopies based on the turbid medium analogy are usually limited by the basic assumption of random foliage dispersion in the canopy space. The objective of this paper was to assess the effect of three possible sources of non-randomness in tree canopies on light interception properties. For this purpose, four threedimensional (3-D) digitized trees and four theoretical ...

The role of rainfall and light interception by litter on maintenance of surface soil water content in an arid rangeland (Khabr National Park, southeast of Iran)

Abstract The impact of rainfall and light interception by litter on maintenance of surface soil water content is determined in an arid rangeland in Khabr National Park in south-east of Iran. Litter weight sampling is done by 90 square plots, each 1 m2, that are randomly placed within site. After determining the intensity of a typical storm of the region (20 mm/h), the rainfall duration requir...

Investigation of Vacancy Defects on the Young’s Modulus of Carbon Nanotube Reinforced Composites in Axial Direction via a Multiscale Modeling Approach

In this article, the influence of various vacancy defects on the Young’s modulus of carbon nanotube (CNT) - reinforcement polymer composite in the axial direction is investigated via a structural model in ANSYS software. Their high strength can be affected by the presence of defects in the nanotubes used as reinforcements in practical nanocomposites. Molecular structural mechanics (MSM)/finite ...

Explaining growth of individual trees: Light interception and efficiency of light use by Eucalyptus at four sites in Brazil

The growth of wood in trees and forests depends on the acquisition of resources (light, water, and nutrients), the efficiency of using resources for photosynthesis, and subsequent partitioning to woody tissues. Patterns of efficiency over time for individual trees, or between trees at one time, result from changes in rates photosynthesis and shifts in the relative partitioning to wood. We measu...

Modeling and estimation of spatial random trees with application to image classification

A new class of multiscale multidimensional stochastic processes called spatial random trees is introduced. The model is based on multiscale stochastic trees with stochastic structure as well as stochastic states. Procedures are developed for exact likelihood calculation, MAP estimation of the process, and estimation of the parameters of the process. The new framework is illustrated through a si...
